The earliest recorded fire in DeSoto took place on December 24, 1867. The town's first schoolhouse was destroyed in the fire, along with several other buildings. However, this fire was just the beginning of a long history of destructive fires in DeSoto. Another significant fire occurred on May 14, 1885. The fire began in the lumberyard, quickly spreading to the nearby businesses and homes. By the time the fire was extinguished, over half of the town had been destroyed. Despite the devastation, the citizens of DeSoto persevered and began to rebuild their town.

Just five years later, on June 7, 1890, another fire broke out. This time, the blaze began in the grain elevator and quickly spread to other structures. The fire caused significant damage to the town, with many businesses and homes lost. Then in 1904, a fire broke out in the downtown area. The fire was so intense that it could be seen from miles away. Despite the efforts of the local fire department, the fire quickly spread, destroying much of the downtown area. The fire was eventually brought under control, but not before causing significant damage.

In 2003, a fire broke out in the industrial park, destroying several businesses. And in 2011, a fire caused significant damage to a local apartment complex. Despite the many fires that have struck DeSoto over the years, the town has always rebounded.
