Edgerton has rich historical roots as a small railway town and as the “Southwestern Cornerstone” of Johnson County. It was founded in 1870 when the Kansas Southern Railway was extended to that point, and named after the chief constructing engineer, Benjamin Edgerton, responsible for the rail expansion. The historic Oregon and Sante Fe Trails parted just a few miles east of town.

Today, the still-small, still-rural community of 1,700 people represents the largest industrial development site in the whole state of Kansas. The city of Edgerton has a growing economy, is centrally located, offers a business-friendly environment, and has competitive tax rates with a developed and evolving infrastructure, which all contribute to the reason LPKC is in our backyard.

Brief Fire History:

In the early morning of March 8, 2013, a heat lamp an Edgerton family used to keep dogs warm outside may have sparked a fire at their home. KMBC's Jana Corrie reported that a woman woke up after smelling smoke and discovered the fire. The woman, her son and her grandson were able to safely escape. Firefighters said the home's smoke detectors were working, but had not gone off yet when the woman awoke. All but one of the family's pets survived.

In December of 2022, a fire at a home north of Edgerton caused about $50,000 worth of damage. Fire crews and Dane County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 1400 block of County Highway W in the Town of Albion at around 3:25 a.m. One person was inside the home at the time of the fire, but they were able to safely evacuate. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Dane County Sheriff’s officials said the incident does not seem suspicious.
